17th Leeds International Piano Competition

29 August – 16 September 2012
Applications are being accepted for the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition which will take place in Leeds, England from 29 August to 16 September 2012. The age limit for competitors is 30 and the closing date for both on-line and postal applications is 1 February 2012.
Prize winners will be offered engagements with some of London’s major orchestras and other international orchestras such as the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra.
The final round concertos will be performed with the world-famous Hallé Orchestra under its distinguished Music Director, Sir Mark Elder. St David Road, Houghton, Johannesburg, Gauteng St John's College, in partnership with ESTA and CASIO has persuaded two brilliant international string educators, to come to Johannesburg, South Africa in order to work with teachers and players. Simon Cartledge (Upper Strings) currently has a thriving teaching practice in Cambridge, which includes regular youth orchestra coaching and an annual visit to Poland to teach on the Zenon Brzewski International Music Course. Pat Legg (Lower Strings) has set up a degree course which included study of Kodaly, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, Alexander Technique and Teaching Skills. She was also a frequent lecturer on Music Education and String teaching at the Northern Royal College of Music and Guildhall. The JIMF are joining forces with the Schleswig-Holstein Musikfestival in Germany for a programme that provides support for young South African talents.

Pretoria Symphony Orchestra

We need some extra competent amateur string players, mostly viola's and violin's. .
In short we are an orchestra comprised of musicians who are passionate about music, but who are not "professional players" if I can put it that way, some are, but most of us have other jobs or are music teachers. We do not get paid to play in the orchestra.
Auditions will be held between 17:00 & 19:00 on 9 February 2012 or another time can be arranged if this time does not suit someone. We can be contacted at The music can be e-mailed.

Cape Town: Beethoven lectures

Beethoven : Immortal and Beloved

Presented by Dr Barry Smith, organist, conductor and musicologist, and Rodney Trudgeon, broadcaster, Fine Music Radio. The image of Beethoven as a colossus, astride the Classical and Romantic movements, underscores the magnificence of his musical oeuvre. This course will focus on Beethoven the man as well as the range and variety of his work.
The first session will begin with an exploration of his life (1770–1827), drawing on his letters and on pieces of his music referred to in the letters.
The second session will discuss his piano and vocal music, and will include a performance of his song cycle An die ferne geliebte.
The focus will then turn to Beethoven’s instrumental music including his violin and violoncello sonatas. His symphonies and concerti will be highlighted in the following session and will include piano performances of a Liszt transcription.
The course will conclude with performances of his chamber music, with a clarinet trio and a string quartet.
