The scholarship is awarded annually to a South African citizen for the study of serious music, either instrumental, vocal or composition.
The scholarship is to be used for local or international music study at an institution or teacher approved of by the Council of the SASMT.
The candidate must be of grade 8 standard of any the music examining bodies or of a higher standard and a citizen of South Africa under the age of 25 years.
Only students of current and paid-up members of the SASMT are allowed to enter.
The scholarship will be paid out in two instalments to the person/institution where the recipient will be studying. Payment of the second instalment will be dependent on a satisfactory progress report. The Society reserves the right not to award a scholarship if the required standards are not met. An award may also be shared between two candidates at the discretion of the Council of the SASMT.
Each entry must include:
(i) the completed entry form,
(ii) a certified copy of the candidate’s identity document,
(iii) a full academic record,
(iv) recommendations by two referees, one of which must be the head of the department/institution where the applicant is or has been studying,
(v) a short curriculum vitae,
(vi) a recent unedited DVD recording as specified below,
(vii) a declaration by the teacher that the DVD is of the candidate’s own performance,
(viii) a photo in electronic format about 500 px in height.
The DVD recording must consist of the unedited performance of a minimum of 3 contrasting works from at least 2 style periods with a total duration of 15–20 minutes. The name and instrument of the candidate must be indicated on the DVD but not recorded. The quality of the recording could influence the result .Recordings will not be returned after adjudication but may be collected.

The winner must be prepared to give a performance at the next SASMT Annual General Meeting. In the case of having submitted compositions, a performance of one of the compositions should be presented at the next SASMT Annual General Meeting.
Die beurs word jaarliks vir die studie van ernstige musiek, instrumentaal, sang of komposisie aangebied aan 'n Suid-Afrikaner.
Die beurs moet vir plaaslike of internasionale musiekstudie aangewend word, aan ‘n inrigting of by ‘n onderwyser deur die Raad van SAVMO goedgekeur.
Die kandidaat moet op graad 8 of ‘n hoër standaard wees van enige van die eksaminerende liggame asook ‘n Suid- Afrikaanse burger jonger as 25 jaar.
Slegs studente van huidige opbetaalde lede van SAVMO word toegelaat om in te skryf.
Die beurs sal in twee paaiemente aan die persoon/inrigting waar die kandidaat studeer betaal word. Betaling van die tweede paaiement sal afhang van die bevredigende vordering van die kandidaat. Die Vereniging mag besluit om nie ‘n toekenning te maak indien die standaard van inskrywings nie na wense is nie. ‘n Toekenning mag ook gedeel word tussen twee kandidate na goeddunke van die Raad van SAVMO.
Elke inskrywing moet die volgende insluit:
(i) voltooide inskrywingsvorm,
(ii) ‘n gesertifiseerde afskrif van die kandidaat se ID-dokument,
(iii) ‘n volledige akademiese rekord,
(iv) aanbevelings deur twee referente, een waarvan die hoof van die department/instansie waar die kandidaat studeer of gestudeer het,
(v) ‘n kort curriculum vitae,
(vi) ‘n onlangse ongeredigeerde DVD-opname soos hieronder gespesifiseer,
(vii)‘n verklaring deur die onderwyser dat die DVD ‘n opname van die kandidaat se eie werk is,
(viii) 'n foto in elektroniese formaat ongeveer 500 px hoog.
Die DVD moet bestaan uit die ongeredigeerde weergawe van 'n minimum van 3 kontrasterende werke uit ten minste 2 stylperiodes met 'n totale duur van 15-20 minute. Die naam van die kandidaat en die instrument moet op die DVD aangedui word maar nie opgeneem word nie. Die kwaliteit van die opname kan die uitslag beïnvloed. Opnames sal nie na beoordeling teruggestuur word nie maar kan afgehaal word.

Die wenner van die beurs mag uitgenooi word om ‘n uitvoering tydens die daaropvolgende SAVMO Algemene Jaarvergadering te gee. In die geval van ‘n komposisie-inskrywing word verwag dat een van die komposisies uitgevoer word tydens die daaropvolgende Algemene Jaarvergadering.
